LUIGI FUMAGALLI’s Italian birthright, combined with a love and appreciation for Eastern and Oriental cultures, have inspired a unique passion in his paintings—especially those featuring the lovely women of Hawaii, Polynesia and the Orient. His special genius is evident in this collection of Island beauties. These works demonstrate his ability to passionately capture, in each painting, not only beauty but also the essence of person, place and culture.

Born near Milan, Fumagalli studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. In 1964 he moved to Hong Kong, subsequently travelling the Orient for six years, painting, exhibiting, filling his sketch books with ideas that even today inspire his work. He constantly experimented with color and line, interpreting the peoples of one place and culture through the perspective of the other.

In 1970 a two-day stop in Honolulu led to a mural commission, and that to others. For nearly eighteen years, Fumagalli has called Hawaii home, delighting in the clarity of her light, the variety of her colors and the ethnic mix of her peoples. Here his style has matured into a strong expressionistic balance of realism and abstraction.
